Movie Trailer of the Day: The official full-length trailer for the much-anticipated Blue Harvest follow-up, the Family Guy Empire Strikes Back parody, Something, Something, Something, Dark Side.

The hour-long special will be released on DVD and Blu-ray December 22. A TV airdate has been tentatively set for May 23, 2010.

What strikes me most about this picture is how much urban development happened in the subsequent 60 years or so. By the 1950s, New York as we know it was starting to take shape. In this picture, the UWS looks downright desolate.

When the film was first conceived in 1978, Martin Scorsese originally planned to cast Dan Aykroyd as Amsterdam Vallon and John Belushi as Bill ‘The Butcher’ Cutting. However, the project fell apart after Belushi died. A cast reshuffle had Mel Gibson as Amsterdam Vallon and Willem Dafoe as The Butcher. Eventually,Leonardo DiCaprio was cast as Amsterdam Vallon and Daniel Day-Lewis was cast as The Butcher.

While filming a fight scene, Leonardo DiCaprio broke Daniel Day-Lewis’ nose. Day-Lewis continued to film the scene despite the injury.

Daniel Day-Lewis said in an interview that he listened to the music of Eminem to prepare for his role.

The scenes where Bill the Butcher taps his glass eye and where he yells, “Whoopsie daisy!” during the knife-throwing act were both ad-libbed by Daniel Day-Lewis.

Martin Scorsese hired “The Magician”, an Italian man famous for a 30-year career as a pickpocket, to teach Cameron Diaz about the art of picking pockets.

Sarah Michelle Gellar was originally given the role of Jenny. However, with scheduling complications between the film and Gellar’s TV series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (1997), she backed out. Martin Scorsese then chose Sarah Polley for the part but later went withCameron Diaz after studios insisted he pick a more “bankable star”.

Bill’s last words, “I die a true American”, were the last words of his true-life counterpart, Bill Poole.

Visual Effects guru Steve Johnson is in the process of putting his behind-the-scenes video archive from the movies he’s worked on onto his new youtube channel. This welcome message gives just a small taste of what he’ll be uploading in the weeks to come.

There’s a two part video up where Steve talks about doing the creature effects for James Cameron’s The Abyss (fuck you, it’s one of my favorite movies). Part on is here.
